I’m sure my girls team would have loved the size of the Yankee Stadium pitch….it just looked very narrow for a professional men’s game and Twellman couldn’t stop talking about it. The size reminded me of some poor fields that we’ve played on that affected our game. My team has struggled on a smaller field with weaker teams that we have dominated on a good wide pitch before. Basically, our possession needs to continuously improve to deal with the added pressure in tight spaces. I was just hoping someone who is trying to stick to the 3four3 methodology could offer a tactical adjustment they use….for now, we’ll just keep working it!
I bought this: http://www.peaksports.com/soccer-confidence-cd/
Peak Sports has a ton of material but this is what I went with because it is designed for soccer players. I coach U13 Girls and I’ve found that the mental game is really big for them. I’m convinced that if any player bought this and and followed the program, they would see massive improvement. Studying it and tailoring it for the team has been the tricky part for me. It’s really made for a player but the lessons are great and the extras include a coaches and parents checklist for before and after games. I really like it. It gives you tools for getting players to let go of expectations, focus on the moment instead of distractions/outcomes and be confident and relaxed with focus.
Another one that is less comprehensive but definitely effective (a lot less expensive as well) is: http://beastmodesoccer.com/downloads/mastering-the-inner-game/ Good stuff!
Gary and Brian,
Great idea to post this classroom session. It gave me some more good insight to what I have been studying and teaching my team. My team has received a steady diet of 3Four3 activities but I am definitely guilty of mixing in other material which I see now is just preventing them from really learning this curriculum …that’s going to stop. As mentioned above, I’m looking forward to seeing the positional possession game and the 5 v 5 v 5 game. Thanks again, your work has made me a better coach which has translated directly to my player’s development.

Try not to laugh too hard at the field…. The competition was weak but I was happy with it because I am trying very hard to get the girls comfortable possessing. So, this was at least game speed and and they started moving it fairly well. I am loosely following a 4-3-3 curriculum and interjecting 3four3 activities where I see fit. These girls do 4v0 at every single practice and I mix in the other 3four3 activities. I just introduced Lose Your Man at the practice before this game so it’s not showing quite yet. I actually mentioned reducing the 4v0 to every other practice and was met with some serious opposition from the girls which made me very happy. My plan right now is to do 4v0 and Lose Your Man as part of every practice and I am beginning with the attacking patterns.
Please shred this video! Thanks in advance!

How did your team take to your theme of possessing in the attacking third? I’m curious to know how you taught it. I have been working strictly on possession in the back, building out of the back and connecting with the midfield. This Wednesday will be the first exposure to the attacking patterns since the beginning of January. After spending a couple of weeks on the attacking patterns, I would like to work on possession in the attacking third, but I’m not sure how I’m going to do it yet. Unlike you, training for possession is new to me. I always included possession games and stressed the importance of possession to my teams, but the 3four3 stuff has really helped me connect the dots -so to speak.
March 31, 2014 at 9:21 pm in reply to: UC United BU13/14, 03/22/2014 First game of the season. #2011Andrew, I have really enjoyed a number of your posts. After reading them, I’m not sure if I’m even qualified to critique. That said, I think your team did well to slow down and possess the ball instead of just blasting the opposition. The only criticism I can offer is that the attacking mids, forward and wings look like a line of 5 forwards when they get near the goal and the wings don’t seem to really utilize the corners. If the attacking mids were to hang back a bit, I think the depth would help the attack. I think running them through the 3four3 attacking patterns would help to spread the field on the attacking half. The wings seem under utilized. I am trying to figure out a good way to teach my players to possess in the attacking third and move the ball back and forth like the defenders do, probing for the opening instead of ramming it toward the net. I see the same “blood in the water” mentality with your team when they get near the goal.
Greetings 3Four3,
My name is Chad Moran and I coach a U12G team in Clovis, CA. Like many of you, I have been stalking 3Four3 since the video was published. I have been coaching soccer since 1999. Three years ago I started coaching competitive/travel. My enthusiasm and drive along with some really great athletes has produced success. Last year my U11 team won our State Cup and earlier this year we were fortunate to pull off a defeat of the other State Cup Champion in PK’s. We can compete with the very best teams in Northern California but there has been something missing all along. My Club does not have a clear curriculum and I have essentially been training myself. I’ve gone to coaching courses, I watch the game, I steal shamelessly if I see something that works, I have a library of books, videos and internet subscriptions- Coerver, SoccerU, a bunch of NSCAA material, World Class Coaching, Beastmode Soccer (which is also a favorite) – seriously folks, I have it all. I have worked very hard and learned a lot but in the end, I feel like I don’t know SHIT! Gain confidence in your coaching….I’m IN! Show me the way!
I’ve watched all of the videos now and I’m thinking…I’ve been doing 4v1, 3v1, Rondos, playing out of the back…..but never with such purpose & clarity – it is all tied together!….I love that there is one clear, cohesive message throughout all phases of the game. I also greatly appreciate the very fine details I am seeing. 3Four3 drove me to acquire a Hi-Pod not long after I saw the U11 Possession video so I will get some game video as soon as I have implemented the curriculum the right way. Gary, what kind of audio setup do you use?
Glad this program is finally here….ready to learn! Thanks Gary and Brian!
