I also think it’s about creating a family. The closer the players are with each other and the head coach, the easier it is to work hard and do anything for the other. I believe this is something that isn’t created, let alone, believed in because it would be easier to buy players than create they culture necessary to win.
The players want to feel like they are a part of something greater than themselves and creating that culture can improve that area. Of course, the other side is that if certain players don’t buy into it, it can bring the team down. It’s up to the coach to pin-point that and get rid of any negativity or anyone with the attitude of “I’m bigger than the team.” If you can’t get rid of the player then it helps letting them know (or putting them in their place) they are just as much of an equal as the rest of the players.

I appreciate you being honest. I’m doing my best to be. It’s the only way we’ll get better at coaches. I did ask him. He gave me a very vague answer, which is why I’m asking y’all. There was no patterns or anything to it. He literally just rotated strikers and had players kick a ball in. There was no pattern, system, or anything. I do understand the importance of practicing certain things, but in my opinion apart from 4v0 rondo and patterns, everything should be 100% game like training. I want to understand the mind frame of why go from unopposed to completely opposed and expect the same results.
I completely agree with choreographed patterns. This was just two players running into a box with a ball served in. The head coach (who is the Director of Coaching for all of the competitive teams at my club) did this and then expected his players to replicate it when we went straight into a 9v9 game. I want to understand the mindset because to me, I don’t get how this is “world class coaching” from an A Licensed coach. Ever since I introduced my teams to possession based soccer in the fall, it has been night and day. The picked it up a lot of what I was introducing very quickly and applied it. The head coach kept yelling at his players to recognize what they did in practice. To me, this means what you’re doing isn’t working and it is time to change. I’m just being honest.
I listened to a press conference by Roy Hodgson talk about how he wants England to play. To sum it up he said, we will work on all aspects of the game, which really means they have no philosophy of how they will play. This is kind of how my club operates. I just want to know what why keep that philosophy if they players aren’t developing. To me it is obvious, but I know it’s not to everyone. Everyone has their opinion and way about going things.
Hey Everyone!!!
My name is Kyle Greeley. I’m currently 25 years old and am from Houston, TX.
I currently coach a U11 and U13 girls teams and work a full time job. I’ve only been coaching for about 2 years now, but truly have gotten serious in the past 5 months. I work with Texas Rush Soccer Club, which is just north of Houston. I’ve been with them for 1.5 years. I coached for 5 months up in Connecticut when I was finishing up my Bachelor’s degree.
I heard of 3four3 back in 2012 when there was a giant explosion from the U11 possession video on YouTube (the one where they play Arsenal-USA). I would check out the blog every now and again but nothing too serious. It wasn’t until after the spring season in May of 2013 did I start to think about why the players I was coaching weren’t developing that much. The coach I was working with would get 1 or 2 players that were great, but it seemed like as the season would go on, everyone would bottom out. We’d ask the players to think, but nothing. We’d try to help the team bond, but nothing. July of this year, I started to do research and check out all the Spanish teams and how they do it. I then realized that I had no foundation for these girls except to kick a ball and try and score. Long story short, I started implementing possession oriented soccer and we start dominating games. It was then I my eyes were open and I started to really check out this possession movement. I’ve implemented a foundation with my team and they now push each other.
That’s my story!! I’ve re-started my blog and have a twitter account. Feel free to message me anytime with comments, questions, or advice!
