Sorry…….last post was corrupt
Hey Gary, >
Wanted to thank you once again for keeping us in mind and allowing 3four3 members in attending the coaching clinic you guys had in San Diego this past weekend. Although I had experienced most of the material presented there were still tons of quality nuggets picked up during the sessions. As they say, the beauty in the details and man were there some good ones here!
Thanks also to Brian for his passion, organization and clarity during the sessions. I did not get the chance to attend the 3rd day as my older daughter played that day (needed to be a good dad and be there) and tactical sessions was geared around the older group but still a great experience! I would have also liked to be a little more involved with the Q&A’s but the science background kept me in the observation and note-taking mode. Questions have come up and I’ll probably shoot some over later…….
Timing to attend was perfect as we move onto league play. My young players, GU10, have followed the same growth path as the one you guys illustrate on your age chart; in our case from tier III 3 yrs ago to now entering Tier I play this season while keeping within the framework. Although we’ve done this with very close attention to your curriculum there was definitely a need for a reminder or refresher to keep on course.
My parents are outstanding with their patience and understanding but whenever there’s some level of success there’s always comments from the “smart-coach” or “know-it-all” that wants to add their two cents on how to make this work better and consequently disrupt rhythm and create doubt. Coming out this past weekend reinforced all thoughts and plans and for that I am eternally grateful. We are all back on the same page and excited with what the future holds!
Thanks again and take care!Hector

I hear you but it’s hard to argue against someone with about 0.700 success rate cherry picking tournaments and playing on the lowest level in regular season. We all know that at the early ages you can get away with the jungle stuff.
Believe man I’m taking care of it …..enough of the scrimmage and the constant running without the ball in training.
thanks John!
It is a war.
and I am in that process of preparing to present philosophy and curriculum. It’s such a pain in the ass to convince these knuckleheads. So defensive..they played a little high school ball, show no interest in getting better either through education or just out of curiosity and to top it off sacrificing all these kids on the way. I can be at the fields all day, every day with the kids and ready to go but 1/2 hr trying to get these people on board is absolutely draining. I’ve considered just stepping back and working with my kids only (things are golden with these guys!) but no fucking way! It did get the point of two camps being created but a cap has been put on that……bombs dropping indeed!I agree 100% Stephen.Long winding road indeed. We are talking about a major shift in philosophy. We just need to buckle up and grind!
Thanks Kyle.
I don’t like the confrontation but I had to get to the point of Demanding. Super difficult to convince given their short term success in winning games and parents because “all” of the W’s. Feelings were hurt, ego a little deflated but can’t afford to sacrifice our kids desire to be the best they can be and have to play the right way .Hi Kevin,
Thanks for your reponse. The program under current administration and with me leading the grassroots is in its infancy. This upcoming season will mark our 3rd year. We have done coaches session but has been done for all age groups (6-19) all at once. Your idea where coaches play the roles as players and to keep it on the younger side sounds good.
What I mean by “running their butts off with no ball around, scrimmaging and working on their “shape” is that they are constantly running, doing laps around the fields like a track team instead of a soccer team; there is no ball involved…sometimes for 1/2 of the 90 min training session. Instead of strengthening their confort on the ball and working on their ball skills, touches and passing and receiving they are scrimmaging 8v8 and working on the shape of their formation, in this case 3-3-1.
Hello all and happy Holidays!
I have just gone thru my first year in charge of the girls grassroot development (GU6 – GU10) for a competitive club in southern california. I have been silent reader of your forum for quite some time of and extremely excited of 3four3 sharing their framework to empower coaches and players to play the beautiful game. I’ve been coaching for close to 15 years now and, like Ryan above, have just begun to see shades of things “clicking” from a coaching and player performance perspective.
In my case I have been fortunate of a colleague recently adding editable video to our games and sessions and that has really opened up as a great tool to be self-critical and identify areas where to continue improving on. At the same time, there has been games against very high level teams where I have left the game a little bummed after losing a match only to go back and be pleasantly surprised of our group is progressing in cleaner playing from the back, keeping the ball under the hightened pressure, and having pretty good opportunities to finish at goal.
The content from the forum has provided a very good view on how growth and progress is to happen that has helped me with better structure when analyszing team progress and when viewing these videos sessions.
I have also had my girls watch Gary or Brians team play at Cerritos Memorial Classic and come away astonished by the beautiful way they play so I am really looking forward to exploring and greater learning from your material!
Warm regards,
hector
