Hi Paul/Rene
Thanks for the reply.
The Group I have been with for the last two years are fairly good technically. I would consider them the best team relative to their competition in our county. It’s not so important but they have only lost one match in two years albeit in 5aside football. My aim is for them to be able to compete and beat the top clubs in our capital city here in Ireland.
The work I and the coaching team have been doing mostly consists of ball mastery, 1v1’s and 3v3’s. Like I said previously I started doing the 4v1 rondo and some positional play a few months ago. I’ve always encourage our players to get on the ball and not be afraid to dribble/take-on an opponent. I’ve never actually told any of them to pass the ball although they pass the ball around very well; recently after a tournament another coach came to me and asked how we got them to pass the ball around so well. I didn’t have an answer! Just told what kind of training we do. To be honest a coach on twitter was my guiding influence @markproskills
This season I want to instil a possession based philosophy in them but I don’t want to mess it up by doing the wrong things or giving them the wrong messages. I have watched every video here numerous times and studied all the material and can confidently put on these drills but I wonder if this is enough. That is why I asked what you are doing with your team; I was not surprised to hear you do a lot of other stuff but happy to hear you are following the 3Four3 principles.
As you pointed out, I think Brian’s Day 1 video is the key; Establish you teams identity, something we have not done yet. Winning seems to be a dirty word these days on this size of the Atlantic the buzz is all about developing players over the team. Quite frankly I want to do both but don’t want to sacrifice one for the other and this is one of the reasons this has not been done yet. I asked Gary on Twitter recently if he coaches tricks etc and said he didn’t but was delighted to hear he absolutely encourages it. Up until recently I was lead to believe if you encourage kids to keep passing the ball you would kill the natural creativity which kids have.
Rene,
Our U9 team will train 2 nights midweek for 1hour and on Sunday morning for 1.5 hours. We are not in a league as such yet but do enter Tournaments regularly. I too would be happy share materials ideas etc. Maybe post a training session/drill or game highlights also.

Hi Paul
Could you give us an idea of what type of stuff you do with these kids.
I’m guessing when you say “a heavy investment into their technical skills..” you mean ball mastery/coerver 1v1 type stuff? Are you still doing it at U10?
What other type possession exercises do you other than whats here on 3Four3? What drills work best for you? What kind of messages are you giving your players?
I will start back coaching an U9 boys team in a couple weeks. I’ve been focusing on Technical skill mostly, although I introduced the 4v1 rondo a few months ago and did a bit of positional playing towards the end of last season in preparation for some Tournaments. I want to start instilling a possession based philosophy this season. Are the drills here all I will need or should I be looking elsewhere?
Many Thanks
Christian
Hi Shawn,
I absolutely loved watching these kids play. These kids are so technically able they remain me of some of the Barcelona USA U11 players. They seem to play with a lot of fun and freedom.
Were they born in 2006 or 2005? I coach an U8 team (born 2006) which I considered to be pretty good but these kids seem to be at a different level.
Great, I currently coach U8’s (born in 2006) so I too am interested to hear from other coaches in this age bracket. I have not done any posseion based drills yet. At the moment we concentrate on encouraging dribbling and taking on the defender on 1v1. We do lots of ball skills, tricks etc however I plan to introduce the 4 v 0 receiving across the body in the next week or so. I will post our progress.
I coach younger kids 6-8 so do not have much to contribute as have no experience teaching possession base football. I have however read every signal post on the forum.
I do agree with others that if Brian and Gary contributed more to the forum, it would be a much more lively place. Thanks Gary for pointing that out.
Yes it’s @christianire
Thanks Jed,
I’ll plug your book since you seem to be a bit too modestHi Jed,
I was wondering if you were going to sign up. For those of you who do not know it is Jed who is asking the questions in the audio on the homepage. I didn’t realise it was you till the goodbyes at the end.
I recently bought your book and must say I can appreciate the research you did in writing this. I noticed that there are a number of the drills in your book are also here on 3four3 coaching. It was mentioned at the end of the interview that the Kleibans were sending you their curriculum. I’m wondering if theses drills made it to your book from your trips to La Maisa or was it from talking to the Kliebans.Although the drills looked good eg 4v0 and I taught about them while reading them in you book, it’s only after looking at them here and seeing Brian execute them did I truly understand them. It’s true you can search the web for soccer drills and get millions of hits then why is every football team not playing beautiful football; well I have it confirmed to me now. It’s the way you teach, it’s the way you communicate, it’s the little details and it’s striving for perfection in your players. Not moving on till they are perfected. These qualities are hard to convey in a book.
In your introduction you asked who your biggest influences are. I came to coaching because of my son. When I first saw my son playing to coaching I taught to myself that he will never be able play. Through practice and learning, he is now one of the most skillful players in his age group U8’s at the academy where I coach. I once taught like a lot people that you were born with talent now I know that is not true. I love being wrong because when I find out; it means I’ve learned something. You talk about this in your book. I have another son 4years old who can do almost as many tricks as his older brother.
So for the last couple years the biggest influence on my short coaching career has been Mark Senior (@markproskills) bear in mind that I have only coached kids 5-7 years old so I believe in lots of touches, skills, tricks and dribbling for this age group. He in many ways goes against the grain, just like the Kliebans. Like a lot of people when I first saw the U11 possession video on youtube I was fascinated by it and have been following 3four3 ever since. This coaching website has come online at a perfect time for me. In 2014 our players will be U9’s and I’m excited about implementing this program. I will start with the 4v0. I plan to record the very first time they do 4v0 and then again a number of weeks later. I will post the results here.Christian

Hello Everyone!
I’m Christian from Ireland. I’ve been following 3Four3 ever since I saw their U11 possession soccer video on youtube. I’ve been intrigued ever since to know what these coaches were doing to get theses kids to play football the way they do.
The children I coach are ages 6-7 so at the moment they are a little young for this type of possession based football. At the moment we teach 1v1 skills and ball mastery. However from what I’ve seen so far on this site I will take some of the basic concepts and introduce them to my players. I look forward in a year or so to start teaching this type of stuff real.
