Andrew,
I’ll be running a U12B practice from 6-7:30pm and a U18B practice from 7:30-9pm that night. We are at Hoodview Sports Park in Happy Valley/Clackamas area.Let me know if you will be able to attend.
Let’s set up a Tuesday or Thursday in February. Around 6pm or 7pm would be good.
Keep in mind that nearly everything Brian and Gary do is meticulously choreographed. By doing so it is more likely that all players see what the next move in the same way. The concern of too many players voicing different options usually comes from teams that are allowed to “free play” a lot. All players are seeing different things develop because they are not unified around a common way of doing each thing. When you choreography everything: building out of the back, attacking patterns, throw ins, set peices, etc.. then all the players are looking for the same set of variables and likely come to the same conclusions.
All that being said, rarely have I been involved in any team where TOO many players were vocal in their communication. Usually lucky to find a couple.
Brian,
Great to see you on here now! Things are going well here in Portland. Definitely need to catch up soon.
I started using a whistle after watching Brian use it during a coaching clinic he put on for us here last year. I am also a PE teacher by day, so it was not a completely foreign concept to me.
Can’t speak for Brian regarding “why” he uses it, but for me it is simply a way to get the players’ attention and facilitate transitions without expending the energy of yelling “freeze!” or “Stop!” . I think it has been a positive addition to my coaching, though it is a very minor detail, and probably not vital.
I can speak towards Brian’s management of player expectations during a clinic. When he ran the clinic here he set very clear guidelines for the player behavior during all sessions. I believe you see it in effect in the videos.Hey guys,
I am always open to meeting up with local coaches. Hopefully we can organize some get-togethers soon.
We also have Sean Monaghan on here who also coaches here at TFA Barcelona OR (Academy Director/ U16 head coach).
Looking forward to networking with all of you.
Wolfgang,
Let’s definitely meet up soon.
Rene,
Yes, we are on the Eastside. Let’s connect soon. Are you on twitter? Connect with me @thisguytoph
Andrew,
Yes, Pedro is our BU11 coach and my assistant coach with the Bu18. He had mentioned that he had met some coaches at this last license course that had similar ideas.
I am happy to chat or meet up anytime. Feel free to hit me up on twitter to coordinate sometime.
Rene,
I am from Portland as well. We should connect at some point. Always looking to network with local coaches with similar philosophy.
Liviu,
Absolutely. I am always looking to meet up with like-minded people. During the Spring my high school team occasionally makes it up to the Seattle area as well. Plenty of opportunity to meet up, I’m sure.
I’m Christopher Cramer and I am the DOC and coach of the U12 and U17/U18 boys at TFA Barcelona OR, located in Gresham, OR. I also coach a varsity boys program in SW Washington at Columbia High School.
I have been a fairly silent reader of 3four3 for several years now. I have always coached an attacking, possession-oriented style of soccer and my search for educational resources led me to Barcelona USA about 6 months before Brian and Gary’s first video post. I had recently taken over the DOC duties at a small club and was working on overhauling the entire structure of the club, implementing a possession-based system throughout all levels of the club. We joined the Barcelona USA collaboration program (now Total Futbol Academy) about the same time all the videos starting coming out.
Our club hosted Brian for a coaching clinic last winter and I was privileged to visit La Masia with Brian and the TFA crew last March (the week before Brian’s team competed in MIC Cup).
I’m really excited to be taking this journey with everyone. I will definitely be posting videos of games and training.

Alan! Great to see you on here. Guess we can take our telephone conversations a step forward by bringing them to the message board!
