I want to start by saying how great it is to be involved with this new adventure. Being connected to a group of progressive, like minded coaches is a true blessing. Alright now on to the purpose of my post!
It took me a long time to narrow down my own ‘core’ activities. And I’m still tweaking mine a bit. This new component of 3four3 is helping. Some drills that I use are similar, if not identical, to the material we’ve been provided so far. The things that I do differently could be intertwined with or replaced by some of the other exercises pretty easily. But it all boils down to one underlying theme:
TRAIN YOUR TEAM EXACTLY HOW YOU WANT THEM TO PLAY!
If you look closely at the core exercises we’ve been provided with this 3four3 curriculum… they’re all connected to one another in some way (other than being played with a soccer ball). Practices are not structured like: Random Drill #1/Random Drill #2/Random Drill #3/Scrimmage. You might not train the same topic back to back to back in one practice like USSF recommends (i.e. todays focus is on shooting!) so it might seem random, but look at the bigger picture. It’s all following the theme of how the TEAM is going to look on game day.
When you’re writing your practice plans, or season plans, you should be thinking about how you want your TEAM to look on game day. If you’re trying to choose a warm up drill, narrow down your activities to things that support your philosophy and vision of how you want your TEAM to look. I can’t stress the TEAM portion of this enough. Over time, you should use the same drills over and over and over. If you want to spice it up, try changing a few variables: grid size, numbers, touch limitations… but keep the themes similar and always in line with the TEAM philosophy and vision. The more you train within the boundaries of that vision… the better!
good stuff john! agreed.
