I found this on the London FA.
FOOTBALL FOR THE BRAVE
A COACHING METHODOLOGY
FOR THE FUTURE
John Cartwright What must characterize our own Playing Vision?
It must be …… Achievable.
Suitable for National approval.
Attractive to watch.
Enjoyable to play.
Effective over long-term.
Adaptable.IT MUST BE CORRECT FOR OUR GAME !
How can we acquire this Playing Vision?
By selecting a small, professional group of coaches who, after discussion between
them, would decide what were, (a) the strengths (b) weaknesses in our game and
compose a national game template. For example —• (a) ……. Determination – Organization – ? Etc.
• (b) ……. Individual skill – Combination play – Poor ball possession – Mixing of game
styles. ? Etc.• (c) Formation of a national playing template.
• Who have displayed the ATTRACTIVE- EFFECTIVE (WINNING) qualities that we
might introduce into a game-style of our own?BRAZIL
• For over 60 years they have produced exciting
players and successful teams .• As a nation they idolize individual skill in the
game but also have the football intellect to know
that individualism must combine within a team
structure for both to blossom.
• Their players have taken local, street-acquired
football ability into the stadiums of the world,
entertained – and won!LIVERPOOL FC
• From the mid.1980’s to early 1990’s; they
produced a brand of football that displayed
the best qualities of our game but they
added the ingredients of individual skill
and combined movement … and they
were successful – here and abroad!
• This could have been the ‘Template’ for us
to follow. —- British fierceness with foreign
fantasy!Germany
• Over many years they have always produced
skillful players and teams who have won major
honours at all levels.
• Interestingly, it is there ability to experience a
slump in national team performance and then be
able to recover so quickly and positively that we
should investigate.
They have a national football ‘template’ linked to
a country-wide network of sports’ centres that
allows them to readjust any distortion to their
long-established playing beliefs.SPAIN/BARCELONA
The Spanish national team ( that consists
in the main of players from Barcelona FC)
and Barcelona FC itself. Each have
provided us with a clear picture of what
can be achieved once a suitable playing
vision is established and a strategy is
carefully prepared and determinedly
followed.Constructing a National Development Plan
• How and where was the game learned in the past — here and abroad?.. In the streets and waste
ground of our large cities; in school playgrounds; and occasional competitive match for club or
school. THERE WAS NO ORGANIZED COACHING.• This provided much more PRACTICE/PLAYING time than COMPETITIVE PLAYING time.
• Practice/Playing had a close REALISM to competitive play requirements and so the change from
practice/play to competitive play was easier to make.• The above situations no longer apply in the development of our young players. Instead of
’natural’ learning occurring, ‘organized’ coaching has replaced it…..in conjunction with this,
less practice time is available but comp. match time has increased. (exams without tuition)!• Attempts to construct alternative coaching and development models by the FA have proved
unsuccessful. Nothing has replaced the street-learning phenomenon.• In order to overcome our long-term problems with development, we must inject the qualities of
‘natural’ development methods of the past within a modern coaching and development format.
A ‘PRACTICE-PLAYING METHODOLOGY’ …… playing qualities
necessary for consistent success at the highest levels of the game.• This format must contain individual skill and combined playing qualities to
produce the excellence necessary for club and country in the future.Constructing a National Development Plan

• A modern concept of Street Football.
• A coaching methodology structured towards an agreed NATIONAL PLAYING VISION
• Each learning level prepares for subsequent level(s). — PROGRESSIVE LEARNING
• Levels 1-5 of increasing football DEMANDS, DECISIONS AND DIFFICULTIES according to age/ability
• Gradual decrease in practice space: gradual increase of opposition.
REALISTIC PRACTICES — individual skills: tactics – offensive/ defensive: goalkeeping: game-understanding, runs throughout the
programme.Skill is action with interference — Technique is action without interference. Football
is a sport with interference —–PRACTICE WHAT YOU PLAY !
• Types of small-sided games that relate directly to the practice and learning levels of the players… play
what has been practised!
•
• The capability to ASSESS the improvement of players in realistic practice/playing situations throughout
the whole development period. Have the players understood the work and are they doing the work consistently
in competitive situations?• Adaptability within the methodology — to comply with individual playing standards at club and national levels
and changes in playing styles and methods in the future.• Flexibility within the methodology to incorporate new ideas and innovations in the future.
The Levels
• Level 1. AGE 5/6-8 Developing Individualism.
• Level 2. AGE 9-10 Individualism that combines.
• Level 3. AGE 11-12 Preparing for the full game.
• Level 4. AGE 13-14 Learning through the thirds.
• Level 5. AGE 15+ Mixing the game-styles.• At present, levels of playing ability are not set high enough
throughout the development years. Mediocrity is consistently
produced and ‘hyped’ to levels of inflated greatness !!• By the age of 15+ a player, although still physically immature,
should have acquired the individual ability and a sound game
knowledge to project him/her into the game successfully at more
senior levels. Our playing standards are well below required levels throughout
the development years. Poor foundation work means ‘papering
over the cracks’ during the senior years.Topics for each Level
