https://vimeo.com/112673548 low rez for now. Going to upgrade for Christmas so I can start posting HD Vids
On short notice this summer I took over a GU13 team that had been hastily put together from 13 mostly rec and low level select/premier players. We have been recording almost all of our games and I put this video together to examine the team’s progress from a qualitative angle. In quantitative terms we could be doing better, smashing the weaker teams in our league but struggling to beat the physically stronger teams in the top half of the table, most of whom are deeper athletically, are playing Jungle Ball, and bring in ringers from their A teams when they play the other competitive teams.
Mine is a group of very enthusiastic and energetic girls who also have All American Jungle Ball deeply embedded in their DNA. Upon receiving the ball, the default urge of almost all my players is to play a low percentage through ball or drop the head and charge into the heart of the defense at full speed. Deprogramming has not been a smooth or easy process. My athletic players had a substantial “success inventory” playing kick and chase and some have still yet to fully buy in to this “possession thing”. I have spent the bulk of our training time concentrating on core 3four3 exercises, though you can tell from the vids that they need plenty of work in every aspect of the game… technique, fitness, defense,… you name it. Our club is also super tight on practice space, so most of the time we are also training in an area of about 30×40 yards or less, which has slowed progress. It that small arbitrary space it’s very tough to do positional work, run patterns, and paint the overall “paisaje mental” . I have taking to running attacking and ball circulation patterns during pre game warmups, the only time I am guaranteed half a field.
The video juxtaposes clips from two games.
The first game was played Oct 4th, just short of two months from our first practice session. We are playing against one of the weakest teams in the division, which is the weakest division in the U13 age group for the Puget Sound Premier League.
The second game was played on Nov 22 (7 weeks later) against one of the title contenders in our division, who brought in three players from their A team for the occasion. Yes, we have pro/rel AND a player pass system here in Washington. Two great ideas that are idiotic when combined.
In both videos I tried to highlight segments that I thought were “typical” to the style of play executed in each game, not just the best of one and the worst of the other.
We are taking December off so I will be looking to post an update in March, once we have hit the 6 month training mark
