Futsal has really started to take hold in the Dallas area. Wondering how its looking elsewhere. We have a U8 girls team that is entering the regional tournament and hoping for a shot at Nationals with a good number of teams from elsewhere.
December 29, 2013 at 11:48 pm #1183huge fan – lots of touches, confined space. They have regionals/nationals at u8? Can you send a link?
December 30, 2013 at 5:07 am #1188I am a huge fan as well. Both my children love futsal. My U8 has been training with futsal for almost 2 years now in some manner in the offseasons.
The club I coach for and they play for has just recently added weekly futsal training to our curriculum. The program begins in March. Only club in Dallas to do so as of yet. We partnered with City Futsal, who will be providing the training to our players and coaches.
The link for the regionals/nationals is here:
December 30, 2013 at 7:15 pm #1238It’ getting pretty big here in Ohio, Otto Orf from the Cleveland Crunch has brought it to Akron/Cleveland adea.
My u14s will be playing our 1st games this Saturday.
We’re excited to play but ready for some tough lessons.
I think.it ties in perfectly with the possession game.

December 30, 2013 at 7:53 pm #1244Thank you for passing on the regional/national tournament info – have been tracking what is being done at nationals for a little while now, but did not realize u8s were actually doing regionals.
What do you think – is that a little young for regionals, or just right for the right group of girls/families?
December 30, 2013 at 8:05 pm #1245Will, interested to hear your impressions. I’ve been playing in futsal men’s league since 2006sh; introduced my u8 girls to it very young. I have separate post here on some initial thoughts on how we can scaffold what you do in futsal to align with the approach here, but those are very preliminary thoughts and very much welcome critical commentary.
Along those lines, I’m actually viewing everything on this site through a lens of how to tie back down to 4v4 (which we do outdoor at u8) and to futsal.
Finally, there is a decent tactical series on utube put out by someone in Brazil, with English translation that has certainly given me ideas over the years. I have some of the posted here (note that url will be dead soon, likely moved here & that much of the content there is stale).
If there is enough interest think we could have a few threads just on aligning approach to futsal with principals and approach here.

December 30, 2013 at 8:34 pm #1247I think for the right group of kids and families its a fit. The squad we put together last spring consisted of girls from 3 different clubs. All highly competitive and advanced for their age.
Spent a couple months doing futsal specific training provided by Esteban Mariel of City Futsal in Dallas. Who is now a member of the US Youth Futsal regional coaching staff.
The girls now all play for the same club but have kept the futsal team apart from the club as something for fun, to learn, and to compete with. They have been playing up with U9s this winter and have excelled, This group though even outdoors dominates the next age group until we get into the most elite of teams.
The parents happily cheer and are not a bunch of over the top people and let myself and one other dad coach them without issue. We are looking forward to traveling as a group to KC for nationals as a get away with the girls.
December 30, 2013 at 9:18 pm #1248Very helpful background and good luck at regionals/nationals!
Regionals for us is no small trip – San Diego this year – but gives me something to think about for next year.
Do your local futsal leagues play fifa rules (no passing back to keeper on own half after keeper passes to teammate) + same rules for fouls? Where we have been playing plays slightly modified rules (curious Kevin what you are doing at Rose City).
If you ever have decent video, would love to see; our team is also u8s so would be interested to see what others are doing at that level.
December 31, 2013 at 2:38 am #1251I dont have any futsal video as I am coaching the futsal matches, but we took them to TN for a U9 tourney in November and i have some.footage. it was 6v6. In Dallas this group has already been playing 9v9, not personally a fan of the big field for them at this age, but it is what it is here.
We do play with modified rules here. They step the rules up.as the age groups increase. When they play U8 its more of an open game, U9 a few more rules are enforced, etc…

December 31, 2013 at 8:17 am #1255Thank you for that. I am going to ask a parent to film some of our futsal this session for my own education and will post some of that here. Is your team the white or black?
Also, you girls are you u8 – but the screen at the front says 06 Selecao. May girls are also 08, born March 2006, but thought they would be deemed 05s since the ages go August 05-July 06.
Reason for all the questions is it will be good to benchmark with teams in other parts of the country (by the way was born in Dallas and still have lots of family down in the valley).
December 31, 2013 at 8:37 am #1256Not to sound like a snob, but I wouldnt have posted it if they were the team in black. haha My daughters squad is the one in white. Here in TX they are all deemed 2006s as their soccer year. 8/1/2005-7/31/2006. Born between those dates you would be an ’06, born before an ’05, born after an ’07, etc…
I was born and raised in the Valley! Small world mi amigo.
I will see about filming out futsal match this friday night. I can have the other dad coach the squad if he is available. Video is an excellent tool. I carry mine everywhere. I have film of most all my daughters outdoor matches. I provide a copy for our coach for him to review for the squad, and I break one down for highlight stuff. Im not one to sit her down and go over film with her. Not age appropriate yet, but will occassionally show her a clip or two of good stuff and break downs in play. Her coach plays emphasizes off the ball movement and possession. Tells the kids daily that he watches the players without the ball more than the one with it. Her group is only U8, but are just phenomenal to watch when they are on.
December 31, 2013 at 6:21 pm #1270LOL – that is funny and that is a heck a team!
Mi padre is from Weslaco.
Happy New Year!
December 31, 2013 at 6:52 pm #1272I was born in Weslaco. Tell me you know what El Pato’s is.. haha
December 31, 2013 at 8:35 pm #1273Small world! I don’t know what el pato is (other than the duck), but I often tell my wife “hey baby que paso, I thought I was your only vato” . . .
Old man grew-up on Iowa Street. There is a grade school there named after my uncle (Raul Gonzalez).
If I ever get the girls down there will have to organize a Weslaco game!
December 31, 2013 at 8:49 pm #1274I know the street and the school… the song, brings back memories! Haha. Girls soccer down there isnt doing very well. Lack of support. It has come a long long way, but still has a long way to go.
