Hello 3four3 members,
Below is a link to my team’s 7th match of the season yesterday. We lost by a large margin and didn’t play to our full potential, especially since we are well into the season. Nevertheless, I did want to share their first filmed match. Hopefully, progress in their play will be made the next time they’re recorded.
Background: have been instilling the 3four3 methodology since 8.23.14; team trains 3x a week for 1.5 hours; limited amount of scrimmaging (if any) thus far; this is the 3rd/C/lowest team of the ’02-’03s in the club; half of the players on the roster of 12 are new, record prior to this match was 1-5; currently sit 2nd to last in NCSL D6; team has not participated in any tournaments as of yet; you will notice in the video their size disadvantage and lack of speed; most skillful player is the CM (#32).
Match: formation is a 2-3-2; on the video, you will hear fans of the other half of the field; blustery afternoon with winds at our backs in the first half, then against us in the second half; opponent was mid-table in the league; opponent were all Latino with a Latino coach; one of the starting CBs injured his foot the day before, therefore, did not play.
My Thoughts: slow speed of play and transitions; could have created larger spacing when in possession; played in areas where opponent’s defense was compact and organized; could have looked to switch point of attack more; nightmare defending; lacked aggressiveness/awareness/communication; not always receiving across body with far foot; center backs rarely dropped off/backpedaled to create spacing; not one of our best performances, but still proud they stuck with it.
Please provide your assessment/thoughts/comments and offer any suggestions on what we would need to improve.

November 12, 2014 at 11:45 am #3034Hi Mars,
A couple of things. First the boys look comfortable playing through the back and back to the defense which is a very good start. You can see them thinking and attempting to execute. You can definitely see the work. Congrats on that. Of course they also need a lot of work as I’m sure all of ours do. Here are a couple of things that I noticed could make a quick impact.
At the 14:00 mark in the first half things start to turn in your favor because your keeper sends the ball long and you start to possess in the middle third. One of the things I learned in this process is that it’s ok for the keeper to send the ball long especially when the other team isn’t giving you space. As long as your team knows that it is to relieve pressure and they immediately start to possess in the middle of the pitch or in the other teams half. It gives the kids confidence and space to work. The kids can learn to both play out of the back and win the 50/50 ball to keep possession higher up.
Another thing I noticed is that the forwards need to get higher to spread the field and work harder to provide a better high option for the wingers.
Last thing is that you might want to consider a 3-3-1. I’ve had good success with that formation spreading the field and providing supporting options.
Anyway that is what I noticed and it has worked for me.
All the best,
Alfredo
December 2, 2014 at 12:56 pm #3071Thanks for watching and providing feedback, Alfredo! There were a couple of moments where the goalkeeper looked to relieve pressure by punting the ball high up the field, however, unable to connect due to the poor positioning of the forwards and center midfielder, as well as, the lack of aim on his distribution. I will share this with my keepers in greater detail, including the option of throwing the ball over the first line of defense. It’s been communicated to them, but yet been rehearsed. I agree with you about the forwards; seem clueless with their overall roles and responsibilities in the video. Happy to say that they’re starting to come along since attacking patterns have been included into the sessions and working more on our play in the final third.
